Average Gross Monthly Wage LTL2138.1
The average gross monthly earnings in Lithuania, excluding individual enterprises, in I quarter 2012 was LTL2138.1. Compared to IV quarter 2011, this is a drop of 1.7%. In the public sector the decrease in gross monthly wages was larger than in the private sector (falls of 2.5 and 1.0%, respectively) and was LTL2267.5, in the private sector the average gross wage was LTL 2057.8.

In I quarter 2012, the average net monthly wage was LTL1661.9. In the public sector it was LTL1756.4, and in the private sector LTL 1603.3. Compared to IV quarter 2011, the average net monthly earnings in the whole economy dropped by 1.6%, in the public sector down 2.4%, in the private sector losing 1.0%.
In I quarter 2012, compared to the previous quarter, the average real earnings also decreased: in the whole economy by 2.5%, the public sector was down 3.3%, while in the private sector it was a more modest 1.9% drop.
The decrease in earnings for I quarter 2012 was largely determined by a decrease in irregular premiums such as bonuses, allowances and one-off benefits in cash, as well as decreasing volumes of work (in enterprises engaging in agriculture, construction, etc).
Year on year the average gross monthly earnings increased
Over the previous year (I quarter 2012 against I quarter 2011), the average gross monthly earnings in the total economy increased by 3.2%, public sector up 4.1%, private sector up 2.9%.
Over the year, the average net monthly earnings increased as well: in the total economy by 3.0%; the public sector 3.8%, the private sector 2.7%.
Over the year, real monthly earnings decreased in the total economy and in the private sector (by 0.6% and 0.9%, respectively), while in the public sector it increased slightly (by 0.2%).
Over the quarter many areas suffered a decrease in average monthly earnings
In I quarter 2012, against IV quarter 2011, the most noticeable decrease in average gross monthly wages was in human health and social work sector (down 5.5%), construction (4.9%) and education (4.2%), while an increase was seen in enterprises engaged in financial and insurance (up 5.4%), information and communication (up 3.7%), public administration and defence; compulsory social security (up 1.5%), administrative and support service activities (0.9%).

In I quarter 2012, the average number of employees in the whole economy increased
In I quarter 2012, compared to the previous quarter, the average number of employees increased in the whole economy and in the private sector (by 1.0 and 2.1%, respectively), while in the public sector it decreased (by 0.9%).
The most noticeable increase in the number of employees in the total economy was observed in enterprises engaged in accommodation and food service and transportation and storage activities (up 6.4% and 6.2%, respectively).
Over a year the average number of employees in the whole economy grew by 3.9%, in the private sector by 6.7%, while in the public sector it decreased by 0.6%.
